The term "Cloud Computing" feels like a relatively new concept in the world of business. However, it may surprise you to hear that cloud computing is anything but a recent development.
Cloud computing means that instead of storing your data and programs on the hard drive on your computer your data is stored and accessed via the internet.
The Cloud also gives you access to ‘on-demand’ internet based services and resources, including software, infrastructure and platform services, on a pay-for-use basis.
Cloud computing can deliver significant savings, unparalleled versatility and convenience for your business. Whether you are a small, medium or large-sized company, the cloud will provide access to online programs and services at affordable rates, using business friendly, payment options.
DataTrust offers hosted cloud services that include:
Free Cloud Readiness Assessment
Call us on 01 404 5129 and we will provide answers to your Cloud based questions and carry out a Cloud Readiness Assessment for free. After this, you will have a clearer picture of where you are and what you need to do in the future to make sure your business is not left behind.
For the last three decades, the trend in computing has been away from big, centralised mainframe systems in favour of more computing power on the desktop - the "Personal" Computer.
Outsource Data Processing Services
Before IBM and Intel spawned the explosion of the personal computer in the early 80s, it was not unusual to outsource serious number crunching tasks (big payrolls etc.) to "data-processing" services from another company, who owned large mainframe computers.
Obviously, this dispensed with the requirement by the consumer of that service to purchase their own hardware and software - instead they were taking a "time slice" in somebody else's resources.
Already Using the Cloud
Most of us use cloud computing all day long without realizing it. When you sit at your PC and type a query into Google, the computer on your desk isn't playing much part in finding the answers you need: it's no more than a messenger. The words you type are swiftly shuttled over the Net to one of Google's hundreds of thousands of clustered PCs, which dig out your results and send them promptly back to you.
When you do a Google search, the real work in finding your answers might be done by a computer sitting in California, Dublin, Tokyo, or Beijing; you don't know—and most likely you don't care!
Web / Cloud-based E-mail
The same applies to Web/Cloud-based email. Once upon a time, email was something you could only send and receive using a program running on your PC (sometimes called a mail client). But then Web-based services such as Hotmail came along and carried email off into the cloud.
Now, we're all used to the idea that emails can be stored and processed through a server in some remote part of the world, easily accessible from a Web browser, wherever we happen to be. Pushing email off into the cloud makes it supremely convenient for busy people, constantly on the move.
