IT Managed Services is a "buzzword" that has been floating around over the last 10-15 years, as an alternative to the traditional reactive "break fix" support agreement.

The IT industry is full of buzzwords and acronyms and the term "IT Managed Services" usually causes the customer's eyes to glaze over and them to tune out completely.

Modern computer hardware and operating systems have a massive amount of pre-failure detectors that constantly monitor the health of the system and can generate pre-failure alerts. In fact, pre-failure alerts are accepted as a legitimate reason, by most system manufacturers, for warranty activation, component replacement etc.

Prior to IT Managed Services, IT companies only knew there was a problem on the customer site when the customer themselves detected a problem and contacted the support company. Of course, at that point, the customer, alas, was experiencing downtime and lost productivity.

Also, it was often not clear who was responsible for the proactive component of maintaining the customer system - i.e. the IT company was available within a defined guaranteed timeframe "Service Level" to solve the problem once the problem had occurred, but who was going to apply the never ending stream of updates that was required on hardware, operating systems and applications?

Perhaps it is best explained by drawing an analogy with your car.  Imagine if you told your mechanic “Joe, I will only ever come to you with my car, when it’s broken!” He would immediately remind you of manufacturer-recommended service intervals, oil changes, worn brakes etc. You would be extremely lucky if the only consequence you suffered was being without a car for a few days, while it’s getting fixed.

Continuing with the car analogy – when you adhere to recommended service intervals and bring your car to Joe for a service – he can check the car, as it’s presented e.g. brake pads, mileage, alignment etc. but he can also check the history of the car, via the on-board diagnostics. Apart from significantly reducing the likelihood of a breakdown, you also finish up with a safer vehicle and have a “right of reply” to the manufacturer, if the vehicle does not perform as it should.
